Red blood cells are the most common component of the four that make up the blood in your body. A low red blood cell count most commonly indicates anemia. Symptoms include fatigue, feeling weak, pale skin, chest pain, dizziness and an increase in heart rate. However, if you don't have a condition causing your low count, you may simply lack iron in your diet. Editor's Note: Chinese medicine is becoming more accepted as adjunctive treatment for cancer patients. Sloan Kettering now has a certification program for acupuncturists. One of the problems cancer patients face is the detriment to their bodies from aggressive chemo and radiation treatment. Among other problems, chemo patients blood cell counts drop, often at alarming rates during therapy. The western answer is more drugs, including Procrit to treat anemia. Recently the FDA has warned against using this drug, due to associated heart problems and that they actually speed the growth of malignant tumors. Fortunately Chinese medicine effectively raises blood cell counts for these patients.
The FDA issued a strong warning that will go on labels for three widely used drugs that treat anemia for cancer and dialysis patients: Procrit, Aranesp and Epogen, saying the drugs cause stokes and cardiac problems and speed the growth of malignant tumors. The spleen stores white blood cells. Chinese medicine considers the Spleen an important component of immune function. In Chinese medicine the Spleen responsible for extracting the nutrients from food necessary to build qi (energy) and blood. Stay Hydrated. Drink sufficient amounts of pure water to help your kidneys eliminate toxic chemicals and waste products. One study found a link between intake of excess sodium and sweetened beverages. It's best then to avoid foods with excess salt and processed foods, which often contain excess salts. The second study found women who drank two or more servings per day of artificially sweetened soda doubled their odds of kidney function decline. Colas in particular contain high amounts of phosphoric acid, a substance known to change the urine in a way that favors kidney stone formation. Drinking too much coffee and similar stimulants will weaken the kidneys over time. It is also believed that cold and icy foods can deplete kidney energy.

Specific Foods for Health Kidneys.
Watermelons. Occasionally Consume large quantities of Watermelons for a day, while regularly emptying your bladder. A watermelon fast.

Don’t Eat Excessive Protein. Eating more protein than you need leads to greater workload on your kidneys, which must filter a by-product of protein metabolism called blood urea nitrogen (BUN) out of your blood. This increased workload can contribute to premature breakdown of the special capillaries (glomeruli) in your kidneys. Defining excess protein can be a bit tricky, particularly for endurance athletes with added high protein needs to aid recovery.
Don’t Take Over-the-Counter Pain Pills on a Regular Basis. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin are known to cause kidney damage and disease if taken regularly. Acetaminophen (Tylenol and Excedrin) can also cause kidney damage and failure if used regularly. All of these over-the-counter pain medications probably don’t pose significant danger if your kidneys are relatively healthy and you use them for emergencies only.
As many professional athletes have discovered during the past several years, regular use of prescription anti-inflammatory pain medication like Vioxx, Indocin, and Naprosyn poses even greater danger to kidney health than over-the-counter pain killers.

Key Nutrients Red Blood Cell Production

Strawberries Boost Red Blood Cells, Study Finds
A group of volunteers ate half a kilo of strawberries every day for two weeks to demonstrate that eating this fruit improves the antioxidant capacity of blood. The study, carried out by Italian and Spanish researchers, showed that strawberries boost red blood cells' response to oxidative stress, an imbalance that is associated with various diseases.

Scientists have previously tried to confirm the antioxidant capacity of strawberries using in vitro laboratory experiments. Now, a team of researchers from the Marche Polytechnic and the University of Granada have demonstrated this effect in vivo, in a study on human volunteers published in the journal Food Chemistry.
Each day, the scientists fed 12 healthy volunteers 500 grams of strawberries (of the 'Sveva' variety) over the course of the day. They took blood samples from them after four, eight, 12 and 16 days, and also a month later. The results show that regular consumption of this fruit can improve the antioxidant capacity of blood plasma and also the resistance of red blood cells to oxidative haemolysis (fragmentation).
"We have shown that some varieties of strawberries make erythrocytes more resistant to oxidative stress. This could be of great significance if you take into account that this phenomenon can lead to serious diseases," Maurizio Battino, lead author of the study and a researcher at the UNIVPM, said.
The team is now analysing the variations caused by eating smaller quantities of strawberries (average consumption tends to be a 150g or 200g bowl per day). "The important thing is that strawberries should form a part of people's healthy and balanced diet, as one of their five daily portions of fruit and vegetables," Battino points out.
"Various strawberry varieties are also being analysed in the laboratory, since they each contain antioxidants in differing amounts and proportions," explains José Luis Quiles, the Spanish participant in the study and a researcher at the UGR.

Incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet. Remember the food pyramid; after carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables are the most important part of your diet. To make sure that you're getting the most out of your diet, aim for at least two colors of fruits and vegetables (e.g., a red fruit and a purple fruit) and have at least five servings a day.
Choose lean protein over fatty meats. While you might sacrifice some natural flavor, you will have a healthier meal overall. Remember, whatever flavor gets sacrificed here can easily be supplemented with spices.
Consume foods that are rich in iron. These include dried fruits, oysters, dark red meat, whole grains and tuna. Your body can more easily absorb iron from these foods than it can from fruits and vegetables, although the latter two still offer a good amount.

Ways to Increase Haemoglobin Levels
Low haemoglobin levels due to iron deficiency anaemia can be corrected by including iron rich sources in your diet. Leafy vegetables like spinach (palak) and fenugreek leaves (methi), beans and lentils like masoor daal, chole, moong daal, toor daal, urad daal, rajma. Asparagus (Shatwar) and sesame seeds (til) are other good sources of iron. Grains like barley (jav), rice, semolina (sooji), bajra and maize (makai) can also be included. You could use combination of any of these sources to cook delicious iron rich recipes. If not, munch on dried fruits such as almonds (badaam), dried peaches or raisins (manuka). If you’re a non-vegetarian, meat and fish are the best sources of iron for you.
Vitamin C rich foods helps the body to absorb iron from foods. Low haemoglobin levels due to deficiency of Vitamin C can be corrected by eating fruits like guava (peru/amrud), kiwi, papaya, oranges, strawberries and grapefruit. You can enjoy them together by making a delicious fruit salad or a mixed fruit juice. Vitamin C rich vegetables include capsicum (Shimla mirch), broccoli (hara phool gobi), cabbage (Gobi), tomatoes and spinach (palak).
If your haemoglobin count is low because your body is not producing sufficient red blood cells, then you could be deficient in folic acid, B complex vitamin that is required to make red blood cells. Sources of folic acid include lentils, dried beans, peas, Brussels sprouts (chota band gobi), banana, corn (makai), beets, pineapple and peanuts. (Note: If you are having more of Vitamin C sources then you’ll have to increase the intake of folic acid as well because Vitamin C causes excretion of folic acid from the body).
Another way is to add dried herbs to your diet which increase the absorption of iron. Especially, coriander (dhania), spearmint (pudina), basil (tulsi), chervil (chevil), dried parsley (sukhe ajamoda), bay leaf (tejpatta) may be helpful.
If you are deficient in iron you should avoid having calcium rich foods like milk and cheese. They block the absorption of iron. Don’t drink too much of coffee, tea and alcohol either. Foods containing gluten like pastas and wheat products also cause anaemia.
Sometimes, foods such as parsley (ajwain) that are rich in oxalic acid may also interfere with absorption of iron. Have them in limited quantities.

Foods to Eat to Increase Red Blood Cells
If you mix some lean meat with beans or dark leafy greens at a meal, you can improve the absorption of vegetable sources of iron up to three times. 


Red blood cells are important for the transport of oxygen-rich blood to body tissues and removal of carbon dioxide from the body. Red blood cells are red because they contain an iron-rich protein known as hemoglobin, which is bright red in color. Over time, red blood cells wear out and die. The bone marrow continually makes more red blood cells. Certain foods increase production of red blood cells.

Anemia is a condition in which you body produces too few red blood cells or each cell contains too little hemoglobin. The Office of Dietary Supplements recommends that adult men and post-menopausal women consume at least 8 mg of iron daily, while women of menstruating age need more, about 18 mg daily. Consuming vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits also helps raise your absorption of iron from foods. Women need at least 75 mg and men 90 mg of vitamin C daily.
