Don’t Eat for Two!
Your appetite increases at various points in your pregnancy and it’s normal to put on weight, but it is a myth that you need to ‘eat for two’. Pregnant women need to take in extra calories to nourish baby (about 500 extra calories per day), but make sure these calories are from nutritious foods, not fatty ones, so that you put on weight gradually and are able to shed pounds easily once you’ve finished breastfeeding. As a rough guide: 
It is normal to gain 1 to 2kg (2 to 4.5 lb) over the first 12 weeks
From week 12 to 28 it is normal to gain 300 to 400g (10 to 14oz) per week
From weeks 28 to 40 (the last 3 months) it is normal to gain 1 to 3kg (2 to 6lb) per month.
See your GP, midwife or health visitor for advice if you are worried that you aren’t gaining weight at the correct rate.
Prescription creams
If you’re concerned about stretch marks there are alternative treatments, though you will have to wait until you are no longer pregnant and have finished breastfeeding. Tretinoin or Retin-A creams are derived from vitamin A and are available on prescription, so see your GP for more advice.
If you’re really keen to be rid of the dreaded marks, laser surgery doesn’t strictly remove stretch marks, but it can help them to fade. Laser treatment can be very expensive, and isn’t available on the NHS. An even more extreme option is abdominoplasty, an expensive operation which removes excess fat, skin and stretch marks from your belly area.
The basic idea is to moisturize your skin so that it remains well-hydrated. The more you keep your skin soft and supple, the less will be your stretch marks. So, how to go about it?
Oil Treatment
Regular massage of the abdomen area, belly, thighs, and chest with oils will help your skin to become smooth and you can see the desired results of reduced stretch marks. Some of the popular oils to be used for this purpose are as follows:
Olive Oil: This is popular remedy for pregnancy stretch marks. Take olive oil in your palms and massage it around your stomach and belly bottom regularly so that the lines start disappearing. Take bath immediately after applying oil on stretch marks. This is a time-taking process but gives you the result. You can also mix olive oil with water and vinegar and use it as a night cream. Application of olive oil exfoliates and moisturizes the skin.
Vitamin E Oil: Mix Vitamin E oil with any of your favorite moisturizer and apply it on the stretch marks on a regular basis.
Other Oils Treatments: You can use other types of oils like as almond oil, coconut oil, castor oil, avocado oil and vitamin E oil. Apply these oils, mixed together in equal amounts, on your stretch marks. Or you can use just one of them.
Essential Oil Massage: This is one of the most effective home remedy. In regular oils like coconut oil or almond oil, you can add few drops of essential oils like as Lavender, Rose, Germanium or other aroma oils. This will dilute your regular oil. Massage it over the affected area.
Castor Oil:  Apply castor oil on the affected area. Cover the area with a plastic bag. Now place a hot water bottle on it.  Keep it for 30-40 minutes and then wash it off. This helps in treating stretch marks. The heat allows the pores to open up and oil absorption takes place easily.
Gelatin (like this or this) is a great way to prevent stretch marks. Collagen formation is essential in improving your skins elasticity.  In order to increase your skins collagen formation you can eat gelatin to get more collagen through your diet. Another name for collagen…you guessed it Gelatin. Today our diets are severely lacking in gelatin. So how would one go about getting more gelatin in their diet. 
Make bone broth. You can drink it plain every morning. Use it to make gravies, soups, sauces, and casseroles. Use it to boil your rice in. It gives it great flavor. You can also use a gelatin powder. This one you can add to drinks and it doesn’t gel. This one you can use to thicken or gel foods. It can be used to make great fruit gummies or jello.
Gelatin doesn’t just help improve skin elasticity it also has numerous other benefits including: improved wound healing, improved sleep, improve insulin sensitivity, fight free radical damage, promote digestive health and reduce gut inflammation,  and reduced joint pain.
Keep your body well hydrated. During pregnancy your blood volume is increasing and you are building a huge water sack for your baby to stay in. Your body has an increased demand for hydration. Your skin also needs to be hydrated for optimal skin elasticity. It is recommended that you get 8-12 glasses of water each day. Mostly however, pay attention to how you are feeling.  Dry lips or throat is a sure sign of dehydration.  Being tired, headaches, or a lack of concentration can also be a sign that you are dehydrated.
Coconut Oil
I used a coconut oil lotion with my first pregnancy to keep my belly moist.  Coconut oil’s ability to nourish  the skin has been known (especially in the tropics) for centuries. Coconut oil is full of saturated fatty acids which consists primarily of medium chain fatty acids.  These types of fatty acids are not easily oxidized, and because of this do not cause harmful free radical damage. Polyunsaturated fatty acids on the other hand are easily oxidized and are therefore more likely to cause free radical damage to the skin.  This is not only true for the oils we put on our skin but also the oils we consume. One of the reasons we have so many skin problems (among others) in the U.S. is because we have switched our dietary oils. Our ancestors primarily consumed saturated fats but the majority of people today consume mostly polyunsaturated fats and trans fats. 
Coconut oil can easily be applied topically. It is best to apply right after a shower to keep the moisture in. I also loved a mixture of coconut oil and beeswax.  The mixture helped to keep the coconut oil in place until it is absorbed into the skin.
Vitamin C
The body uses Vitamin C to form collagen and cartilage.  Vitamin C is also highly effective in reducing free radical damage. Free radicals consume collagen and elastin. It is best to get Vitamin C from a natural food source instead of a supplement. Foods high in vitamin C include red and green bell peppers, guava, kale, parsley greens, turnips, and broccoli. You can also make your own vitamin C.
Oil Treatments
Beneficial oils include: Olive oil, Vitamin E oil, Essential oils, and castor oil.  Vitamin E oil can help improve skin elasticity as well and therefore prevent stretch marks. Most of these oils work because of their antioxidant properties which reduce free radical damage. 
Zinc deficiency is one reason people are more likely to get stretch marks.  Zinc is a natural trace mineral and one of the most abundant in the body. Zinc is also used in the production of collagen and also contains antioxidant properties. 
Zinc can be found in abundance in chicken, lamb, beef, eggs, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. 
Calcarea Fluorica and Silicea
Calcarea Fluorica and Silicea are contained in a tissue-salt-prevent that Lleaon talks about in the book “Bump to Birth“. Lleaon Rao, aroma therapist and herbalist quotes “Calcarea Fluorica helps in bone development and maintains elasticity of skin. It prevents stretch marks, prevents hemorrhoids and varicose veins.”
Mandarin Stretch Mark Serum
Lleaon Rao also has some great recipes for serums and lotions to prevent stretch marks. This contains almond oil,  vitamin E oil, and mandarin essential oil.
Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter
Shea butter and cocoa butter are two of the best emollients out there. They are exceptional at keeping the skin moist and hydrated. Cocoa butter is a natural fat extracted from the cocoa bean. Shea butter is made from the nut of the karite tree. The fatty acids are extracted from the nuts shell.  These work by stimulating the skins renewal process… Again preventing and also helping reduce stretch marks.
Eat for Skin Elasticity
The way we eat overall is extremely important in our skin elasticity. Eating for skin elasticity would include eating a diet rich in collagen (as we talked about) including bone broths and gelatin, vitamin A, C, and E, and keeping a good balance of omega 3:6 ratio. This includes things like eating grass-fed and free range meats and eggs. Drinking raw whole milk from cattle that were grass-fed. Eating organic and locally grown vegetables. Fermented cod liver oil is also very beneficial. Eating in this manner isn’t just for skin elasticity but for fertility and healthy babies.

Keeping your skin moisturized can helps in reducing the stretch marks. When using moisturizing creams, it is better to use herbal or plant based natural creams and lotions.
Try not to gain more than the recommended weight to minimize stretch marks. Doctors recommend that most women will gain between 25 to 35 pounds during the pregnancy.
Nutritional deficiency can increase stretch marks. So add to your diet foods that promote skin health like carrots, nuts, berries etc., and protein-rich foods like eggs, fish and milk .
Drink adequate water, i.e. 2 – 4 liters of water a day to keep your body hydrated and to reduce the risk of getting stretch marks.
Vitamin E oil helps in keeping the skin soft and prevents stretch marks. You can massage your skin gently with it regularly.

  •  Eat a balanced diet making sure you are including plenty of vitiman rich fruits and veggies. which are good for the skin. Also, foods rich in vitiman E, A, or omega 3's can help repair skin.
  •  Stay away from processed foods. Also avoid any empty calorie snacks, animal fats, and soda.
  •  Do not gain more than 25-30 pounds during pregnancy, and gain it at a steady pace. Excess or sudden weight gain will intensify stretch marks.
  • Exercise during the entire pregnancy if you can, even if its just walking. It helps manage weight gain as well as promotes blood circulation.
  • Moistrize your skin. Especially areas prone to stretch marks. Do it every day! You can use cocoa butter, almond oil or vitiman E caplets, which are all beneficial to use during pregnancy. Massage it into your skin, this will help with blood circulation around that area.
  • Pregnant skin is itchy skin, but don't scratch! Scratching can pull and stretch the skin.
Most of these tips are just about keeping yourself healthy, when you are healthy, your skin is healthy. So just keep healthy, follow a nutritious diet, exercise, avoid gaining too much weight. Moisturize your skin. These tips seem simple, but they really can lower your chances of getting stretch marks.
Stretch marks (natural remedies)
What causes stretch marks in pregnancy?
Stretch marks are caused by your skin stretching as you gain weight in pregnancy. They usually appear as pink, red or purple-tinged lines on your tummy, bottom, thighs and breasts. 
Stretch marks may not appear until two weeks before your baby is born. They are permanent, but should fade to a dull, silver colour after your baby is born. 
Stretch marks are very common. Between 75 per cent and 90 per cent of women develop stretch marks (striae gravidarum) when they are pregnant. You are more likely to develop stretch marks if:
There's no way to prevent stretch marks. There are no products on the market that can prevent them, despite manufacturers' claims. Creams that claim to work on stretch marks are applied to the external layer of your skin. But they won't reach the layer underneath, which is the part that stretches. 
One study compared mums-to-be who massaged olive oil into their tummies during the middle three months of pregnancy with a group who did not. No real difference was found. 
Even so, there are steps you can take to minimise stretch marks. Try not to put on too much weight in pregnancy. Eat a healthy, balanced diet, which includes plenty of fruit and vegetables. Try not to eat too many high-fat or processed foods that contain additives and preservatives, as these may affect your fluid retention. 
Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin supple and well-hydrated. There's no need to spend lots of money on creams and lotions. Some complementary therapists recommend aromatherapy oils massaged into the skin. They won't stop stretch marks from developing, but they may relax you and help you to bond with your bump. 
It is also important not to use the essential oils continuously, especially in pregnancy. Use them now and then and keep to safe oils such as chamomile, neroli or sweet orange, blended into a mix of grapeseed and wheatgerm oil. Vitamin E oil can be added to your blend of oils. 
There is no evidence that homeopathic or other remedies will help to prevent stretch marks. But developing a positive attitude to your stretch marks may help you to feel less stressed and troubled by them.
Which complementary therapies could I try?
It's unlikely that complementary therapies will rid you of your stretch marks. However aromatherapy, reflexology, massage, yoga or swimming may relax and help you to come to terms with any stretch marks that do develop.
Stretchmarks during pregnancy — easy tips to prevent them
Stay hydrated
We have all heard that drinking water is great for the body, and this rule applies doubly-so when you are pregnant. Water helps detoxify the body and helps your skin cope with the stress of stretching. Ideally, you should drink at least eight glasses of water in a day, but if you find drinking water too staid, you could substitute it with green tea, that is caffeine free and helps hydrate your body sufficiently.
But just water and green tea need not be your only options. Including foods with high water content into your diet is also a great way to stay hydrated and keep your skin stretch mark free. Include foods like water melons, strawberries, cucumbers etc into your diet to help your skin stretch easily, keeping stretch marks at bay. Read more about how water keeps your body fit.
Eat your vitamins
Vitamin A, E and C are great for your skin. While vitamin A helps in the repair of skin tissue, vitamin E helps keep the skin membranes intact and vitamin C helps in the production of collages (an essential component to maintaining elasticity of the skin and regeneration of skin cells).  And if you lack that glow, include foods that contain Omega 3 fatty acids into your diet – not only will it help keep your skin membrane healthy, it will also give your skin that naturally healthy glow.

Massage and moisturise your skin regularly
During pregnancy the areas that are most prone to stretch marks are your tummy, sides, lower back, thighs and legs since these areas undergo the most strain as your baby grows. Therefore, in order to help the skin in these area stretch without forming marks the skin needs to be well moisturised. But your ordinary moisturiser might not be able to do the trick, since they will not be able to penetrate deep enough into the skin. Therefore your best bet is to use oils that are specifically made to help pregnant mums or natural remedies. According to Ayurvedic practitioners oils like til oil (sesame oil), coconut oil and castor oil are great to help moisturise the skin. During your pregnancy gently massage the areas most prone to stretch marks with any one of these oils twice a day. Remember you don’t need to apply much pressure, just rub the area repeatedly till the oil disappears.
Make exfoliation a practice
Exfoliation is a great way to remove dead skin from the top layers of the skin; allowing new cells to surface and to increase circulation in the area – thereby preventing the formation of stretch marks. Experts say that exfoliation is as important as moisturising one’s skin to avoid stretch marks. Therefore to exfoliate during your pregnancy, you could choose to do any one of the following:
Dry brushing: This is a technique where you can use a soft bristled body brush and brush your entire body to rid it of dry and dead skin. The ideal way to do this is to dry brush your skin from the legs towards the heart concentrating on areas that are more prone to forming stretch marks. After dry brushing immediately have a bath in warm water, and don’t forget to moisturise your skin after. Also, remember to use a brush with soft yet tough bristles and avoid brush over your breasts as the skin around them is usually very sensitive.
Loofah: This is where you can scrub your body while having a bath. Just soak or bathe in warm water (as it allows your pores to open and loosens dead skin) and then use a loofah or scrub made of natural fibre to remove dead and dry skin. After the bath remember to apply moisturiser all over yourself to help your skin adapt to the strain of stretching.
Either of these methods can be done twice to thrice a week. Do not over do this as it can lead to irritation of the skin.
Is there anything I can do to prevent stretch marks?
Sadly, there are no magic treatments that can prevent the appearance of stretch marks. But there are some things that you can do to help minimise the effects.
Stretch marks are very common. As many as nine out of 10 pregnant women get them. Stretch marks happen because your skin stretches as you gain weight and your baby grows. Higher levels of hormones may also affect your skin's protein balance, making it thinner. 
Mums who put on more than an average amount of weight during their pregnancy may be more prone to them, as are mums who are expecting twins or more. 
To limit these effects, try to gain weight slowly and steadily during pregnancy. You can do this by:
Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, cereals, seeds, and nuts. These foods all contain nutrients that are thought to help keep your skin healthy.
Taking regular exercise.
You are also more likely to get stretch marks if your skin is not very elastic. If this is the case, you may want to try an anti-stretch-mark cream. 
It's fine to use an anti-stretch mark cream if you want to. But although these creams can make your skin more supple, they won't be able to stop stretch marks. This is because it's not just your top layer of skin that will stretch. The underlying layers stretch, too. This creates small tears in the collagen, which is what gives skin its elasticity. Anti-stretch mark creams can't reach these underlying layers.
However, you can still use these creams, along with moisturising creams and oils, to keep your skin feeling soft and smooth. Massaging your skin every day with oil or cream will help you feel good about your pregnant body and it may help encourage new tissue growth, even if it doesn't prevent marks. 
Some complementary therapists suggest taking vitamin E capsules or rubbing vitamin E oil on to stretch marks. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that is used in many skin creams, including stretch mark creams. However, vitamin E capsules may not be safe for you to take in pregnancy. Talk to your midwife, doctor, or a pharmacist before you take any vitamin supplements.
If you do get lots of stretch marks, try to see them as a positive sign. You are growing a baby! Rest assured that stretch marks will fade after your baby is born. By the time your baby is six months old, your stretch marks will have gradually lightened to thin silvery or brown lines.
Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks 
Eat a skin-nourishing diet.
You're probably already eating healthy, balanced meals to make sure your baby is getting enough vitamins and nutrients. Incorporating foods that are especially beneficial for the health of your skin can improve your skin's elasticity, which helps prevent stretch marks from forming. Add the following foods to your daily diet:
Foods rich in antioxidants, which help nourish and protect skin. Eat plenty of spinach, blueberries, strawberries, and other fresh fruits and vegetables.
Foods containing vitamin E, which protects skin cell membranes. Eat nuts, seeds, avocados broccoli, and collard greens.
Foods containing vitamin A, which repairs skin tissues. Eat carrots, sweet potatoes, mango, squash, and red bell peppers.
Foods containing omega 3s, which keep cell membranes healthy and make your skin glow. Eat fish, fish oil, walnuts, eggs and oysters.
Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks 
Stay hydrated. Water helps detoxify your body and keeps your skin cells plump, which makes your skin healthier and more likely to bounce back from the stress caused by stretching. Get plenty of water by practicing these habits:
Drink 8 glasses of water a day. If you find it difficult to ingest this much water, carry a large water bottle that holds the equivalent of 2 glasses (16 ounces) of water. Refill it 4 times throughout the day, rather than having to refill a single glass 8 times. It will make drinking enough water less of a hassle.
Drink herbal tea. Choosing teas without caffeine helps your body stay hydrated, and can alleviate the boredom of drinking only water every day.
Eat watery fruits and vegetables. Eating vegetables that contain a lot of water is another great way to hydrate yourself. Eat big salads filled with cucumbers, fresh bell peppers, and celery. Choose watermelon, strawberries, honeydew, and other watery fruits instead of eating baked desserts.
Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks 
Exercise during pregnancy. Exercising helps the skin retain its elasticity by improving your body's circulation.
As an added benefit, exercise will help prevent you from gaining too much weight, too quickly, nipping stretch marks in the bud. Incorporate exercise into your daily schedule in the following ways:
Perform exercises meant to make pregnancy easier on your body. Stretches, kegel exercises, and other simple movements can help keep your blood moving and keep you more comfortable during pregnancy.
Try pregnancy yoga and other low-impact exercises. Yoga and pilates give you an excellent workout without requiring you to move in ways that may feel uncomfortable while you're pregnant.
Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks 
Gain weight gradually. Stretch marks happen when you gain a lot of weight, fast. If you follow your doctor's guidelines for gaining weight gradually, rather than putting on your pregnancy weight all at once, you greatly reduce the chance that you'll end up with stretch marks.
Avoid "eating for two." You should be eating more calories that you did before you were pregnant, but not twice as many.
When you feel cravings coming on, have a little taste of the food you really want - say, ice cream - and a hefty serving of strawberries or fruit. You'll satisfy your palate and feel full.
Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks 
Practice dry brushing. Exfoliating your skin using a dry brush improves your circulation and keeps your skin healthy. Its recommended as a way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks that have already formed, but dry brushing can also be used as a preventative technique.
Use a dry brush made from natural fibers. The bristles should be stiff, but not too tough.
Start from the bottom of your legs and brush your skin upward toward your heart. Focus on areas where stretch marks might become a problem, like your buttocks and abdomen. When you're finished brushing, take a shower to wash away the dead skin cells.
Don't use a dry brush on your breasts, since the skin there is more sensitive and could be damaged by brushing.
Prevent Pregnancy Stretch Marks 
Don't use harsh chemicals on your skin. Many commercial body washes contain sulfates, which can dry out your skin and reduce its elasticity over time. Choose a cleanser made with natural oils that will hydrate your skin, rather than making it lose too much moisture.
Coconut oil can act as a healthy skin cleanser. Rub it over your skin, rinse with warm water, and pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
It may not be necessary to use a cleanser on your skin, especially if it's prone to becoming dry. Wash your skin with lukewarm water and pat it dry.
